Sensis® Consumer Reports
The Sensis® Consumer Report ran until late 2009 and surveyed 1,500 metropolitan and regional Australian consumers to offer SMEs critical strategic insights into their thinking and spending. All participants were 14 years and over, male, female, and from a variety of jobs, income levels and family status. In addition to measuring the quarter’s consumer confidence and behaviour it estimated confidence and expectations for the next 12 months. The reports also provide an independent, objective assessment of consumers’ experiences and attitudes on key issues like health, the environment and the economy.

Australian consumer confidence has jumped to a 15-month high, according to the Sensis® Consumer Report. Report author Ms Christena Singh said the consumer confidence indicator rose by a record 18 percentage points during the quarter, taking it to 39 per cent.

The March 2009 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 21 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a fall of six percentage points from last quarter, bringing confidence to the lowest point recorded since the start of the report in May 2004.

The September 2008 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 32 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a further fall of three percentage points from last quarter, with confidence at the lowest point recorded since the start of the Sensis® Consumer Report in May 2004. Over the past nine months confidence levels amongst consumers have fallen by 29 percentage points. This quarter’s report also looks at the importance of environmental issues to Australians and their priorities for government going forward.

The June 2008 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 35 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a fall of nine percentage points from last quarter, bringing confidence to the lowest point recorded since the start of the Sensis® Consumer Report in May 2004. Over the past six months confidence levels amongst consumers have fallen by 26 percentage points.
