Sensis® Consumer Report

The quarterly Sensis® Consumer Report is designed to measure the confidence and behaviour of Australia's consumer population over the past three months, as well as confidence and expectations for the next 12 months. The report also aims to provide an independent, objective assessment of consumers' experiences and attitudes on key concerns, such as health, the environment and the economy. Topics include:

  • Confidence in financial prospects
  • Household expenditure trends
  • Perceptions of the economy
  • Concerns
  • Contacting the government
  • Consumer banking

Sensis® Consumer Report - June 2008
The June 2008 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 35 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a fall of nine percentage points from last quarter, bringing confidence to the lowest point recorded since the start of the Sensis® Consumer Report Report in May 2004. Over the past six months confidence levels amongst consumers have fallen by 26 percentage points.

Sensis® Consumer Report - March 2008
The March 2008 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 44 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a fall of 17 percentage points from last quarter, the largest fall in confidence recorded in a single quarter since the start of the Sensis® Consumer Report in May 2004.

Sensis® Consumer Report - December 2007
The December 2007 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 61 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a rise of nine percentage points from last quarter. This result was the highest level of confidence that has been reported since the start of the Sensis® Consumer Report in May 2004.

Sensis® Consumer Report - September 2007
The September 2007 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 52 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a fall of seven percentage points from last quarter. Despite this fall, net confidence is still eight percentage points higher than at the same time last year.

Sensis® Consumer Report - June 2007
The June 2007 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 59 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a solid improvement of four percentage points from last quarter. It is also the highest level of net confidence recorded in the three years since the Sensis® Consumer Report started in March 2004.

Sensis® Consumer Report - March 2007
The March 2007 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 55 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead and reveals the drought is the number one concern for Australians for the second consecutive quarter, followed by the environment and the health system.

Sensis® Consumer Report - December 2006
The December 2006 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 52 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. The drought was the greatest concern for Australians and received the highest ever level of concern in any Sensis® Consumer Report.

Sensis® Consumer Report - December 2005
The December 2005 Sensis® Consumer Report found a net balance of 44 per cent of Australians reporting confidence in their financial prospects for the year ahead. This result was a significant decrease of 12 percentage points from last quarter.

Sensis® Consumer Report - September 2005
The Sensis® Consumer Report recorded that the cost of petrol was a bigger concern for Australians than the health system, the environment or terrorism. Overall consumer confidence rose over the past quarter, mirroring increase recorded in SME business confidence over the February to April quarter.

Sensis® Consumer Report - June 2005
Australian consumer confidence fell over the past quarter. In line with decreasing confidence Sensis® Consumer Report found a dramatic drop in Australian's perceptions and expectations of the economy. Health remained the greatest concern.

Sensis® Consumer Report - March 2005
The Sensis® Consumer Report found that Australians were deeply concerned by the recent Asian Tsunami, rating it as their third biggest concern. The Sensis® Consumer Report, also revealed Australians' holiday habits and that consumer confidence had remained stable over the past quarter.

Sensis® Consumer Report - December 2004
The Sensis® Consumer Report found that consumer confidence had risen strongly over the past quarter. Despite the rise in consumer confidence and a fall in SME business confidence, SMEs remained more confident of their future prospects. The Sensis® Consumer Report also revealed Australians' attitudes on a wide range of issues including financial confidence, the environment, education, banking and unsolicited telephone calls.

Sensis® Consumer Report - September 2004
Obesity was more of a concern than unemployment, and Australians were spending more time at work and less time on leisure activities, according to the Sensis® Consumer Report. The survey also records findings on Australians’ financial confidence, concerns, health and fitness, life/work balance and use of the internet.

The inaugural Sensis® Consumer Report surveyed 1500 Australians on an array of topics including financial prospects, the economy and concerns. The report also revealed Australians attitudes to sport, politics and business ownership.
