Sensis® Social Media Report
Sensis, in conjunction with the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA), surveyed 803 Australian consumers and 1,944 Australian businesses to understand how they are using social media.
The Sensis® Social Media Report found that Facebook remains the most popular social networking site in Australia – used by a staggering 97 per cent of social networking users, and nearly two thirds (60 per cent) of all Australian internet users. It is used by more than 90 per cent of males and females, with the average user spending more than five hours a week on the site.
However, only 14 per cent of small businesses, 25 per cent of medium-sized businesses and 50 per cent of large businesses have a social media presence, and social media usually attracts less than five per cent of a businesses total marketing budget, according to the report.
Commenting on the report, Group Manager Emerging Business & Innovation at Sensis, Simon Betschel said, “We know Australians are taking up the social networking phenomenon. However, we wanted to understand how it is being used, so that businesses can make more informed decisions about how they should reach their customers.
“With so many people using social media, it’s clear there are huge opportunities for brands to connect with current and potential customers, but businesses need to be careful in how they interact with people via these sites,” he added.
